“Frozen”

Now THIS is an indie low-budg film that makes me LOVE them!!
We saw the premiere of “Frozen” last night at midnight. I was going on 4 hours of sleep, but I was wide awake.

I knew this movie was going to be amazing, and it was. The director, Adam Green, is also responsible for the underground slasher hit “Hatchet”, which I recently saw at LA’s lovely Cinefamily Silent Movie theater. If you’re a fan of gorey movies and you haven’t seen “Hatchet”, well, you’re not a fan. It’s one of the best, but it was never picked up or widely released, thus the underground fame.

“Frozen” is simple. Basic plot: Three college kids get stuck on a ski lift chair, 50 feet in the air, just as the slopes close for the week. The film is their attempt to survive and escape. The effects were entirely practical (no green screen or CGI), everything was shot on location, and I think this gave the film a palpable truth. It was so intense! I’ve never wanted so badly to leave a theater; I was so uncomfortable.

Someone I spoke to in a line compared “Frozen” to “Open Water”, a film I despised. “Frozen” has what “Open Water” lacked : characters you hope survive.

My fav thus far: I give it a 10.
I hope you see it, even if you have to seek it out in an art house theater. 50% of actually getting picked up.. I really have no idea.
